Although Lana the Labrador retriever is one of the cutest dogs seen on the internet in some time, she has already been rejected twice in her short lifetime. The 2-year-old Lana first appeared on the internet about a year ago when the picture of her sad face earned her the distinguished title of the saddest dog in the world.
Because she went viral last year, a family adopted her – only to toss her to the curb months later. Now Lana made it into the headlines again when she started looking for another forever home. But this time, if she wasn’t adopted by May 20th, the saddest dog was likely to be euthanized.
Fortunately, the internet saw her sad face and came running again. Now Lana has been adopted into a forever home that will hopefully, this time, last her entire life…
After her depressed-looking photo went viral in 2015, many people wrote in offering to adopt her. But it seems the ones who got Lana were not committed to her, as she was returned to the rescue shelter shortly after for undisclosed reasons.
Now, Lana has found a third foster home ahead of her potentially deadly deadline of May 20th.
But Lana’s pretty mug has once again touched the hearts of people across the world. Along with more than 4,000 adoption applications, more than $15,000 in donations have come in to support Lana and other dogs like her.
Lana is headed to her new home in Ontario, Canada shortly. And her new owners are super excited to welcome the internet’s saddest dog into their home.
“We are happy to report that Lana has found a foster home and a new training program,” Canadian non-profit Rescue Dogs Match wrote on their website.
“RDM would like to thank everyone for their concern and support and we will keep you updated.”
RDM also wanted readers to know that May 20th was Lana’s move-by deadline from the overstuffed kennel – not an official euthanize-by date. But if she did not find another home before the May deadline, she could have been put on a euthanize list.
Lana achieved social media success for a second time, because her rescue organization started posting about Lana’s move-by date from the busy kennel. They also wanted everyone to know that Lana’s third birthday was arriving. She turned three on Mother’s Day of this year.
“May 14 is Lana’s birthday (she will be three),” RDM wrote on Facebook last week. “Please help find her a foster or forever home. Lana only has until May 20th.”
The first time Lana was adopted, she was returned to the rescue organization five months later because she became aggressive.
“She snapped at the mom. And they decided because they have kids in the house to bring her back to boarding,” a rescuer said, claiming that Lana only snapped that one time.
